Steps We Use When Getting the Property Ready for Exterior Painting
Pressure Washing
It is essential to determine the state of the exterior walls you will need to have painted. If they are dirty or covered with moss, mold, or mildew, our house painters in Portland or Oregon City can apply the pressure washer to remove all dirt and other substances covering the walls. Our painter will work in an organized way, bringing the pressure washer down, starting at the top and moving in a controlled manner.
Repair Damage
As the walls are now clean, our painter can ascertain if there is any damage to the exterior finish, whether it is masonry, metal, stucco, or siding. If the damage is small, we can apply epoxy filler to holes or cracks with a spackle knife. This gets sanded once it is dry.
Loose Paint Should be Removed
Once clean, our house painting experts will also inspect the siding and trim to uncover any loose, chipped, or peeling paint. After placing drop clots along the wall’s perimeter, we will proceed to remove any loose paint using either a medium-grit sanding block or a paint scraper, depending on the condition of the wall.
Trim Should be Caulked
Any gaps between the house and the trim need to be perfectly caulked. We will fill any open spaces around windows or doors with exterior caulk, paying particular attention to where two different types of materials, such as brick and siding, may meet.
Ready to Start Priming
At this point of the painting project, we will closely look at any exterior stains or unsightly wood knots and apply a coat of stain-blocking primer to those areas.
Protect Lights, Doors, and Windows
Fixtures, windows, doors, and plants near the house will be protected with plastic sheeting and painter’s tape before the actual painting process begins in order to avoid damaging any structures.
Paint the Exterior
The exterior paint color you have selected will be loaded into a paint sprayer, and one or two coats will be applied to the entire house. Our painter will work from top to bottom in a smooth, controlled application.
Trim and Doors Are Painted
After removing all plastic sheeting, two coats of exterior paint will be applied to woodwork and doors. Any drop cloths will be removed at the end.
Special Exterior Paint Projects
Here are some special projects where our Clear Vision Construction house painters will get you the most professional results.
New Stucco
It is tempting to paint new stucco right away. However, at our painting company, we have experience in this area and have noticed that letting a new stucco cure for at least 28 days before any paint is applied will give you the best, longest-lasting results. If painting is done before its time, it will look dusty or chalky and have an uneven finish.
If you are in a hurry to have your new stucco painted, you can help accelerate the curing process by keeping the stucco wet. A good spraying with your garden hose will do the trick. If you keep this up, our professional painters may be able to start painting as soon as a week or ten days after the stucco is done.
Color Consultation
With so many colors and finishes available today, it is no wonder that any homeowner will feel overwhelmed and stressed out by the mere thought of selecting a new color for their home. At Clear Vision Construction, we understand and identify with your indecision or uncertainty at facing this painting project.
If you live in a gated community or a neighborhood with a Home Owners Assiocation (HOA) where only a few color choices are allowed, or there are color limits specified by the town where you live, the Portland painting decision can be much simpler. In other cases, you may want to start getting some inspiration by driving around your neighborhood and noticing what colors catch your eye.
At our Portland painting free estimate, we can talk about the stylistic elements of your home, the color of your roof, particularly if you are not thinking about changing that as well, the stone or brick accents that you may have, and work from there.
Armed with several paint sample swatches, we can place samples on your home’s exterior once you decide on a couple of paint color options. This way, you can have the opportunity of looking at them at different times of day before making your final selection.
